Frequently asked questions

How do I arrange an appointment?

You can email me to make a first contact though it is likely we would need to speak by phone to make arrangements. When I am not available, I have voicemail where you can leave a message and I will return your call. I offer mostly daytime appointments.

What can I expect at the first meeting?

The first consultation is for us both to see if we can work together and whether psychotherapy or counselling is what you are looking for. If we decide to go ahead, we would try to arrange practicalities like finding a regular meeting time. You may also have questions and concerns that you want to raise with me. Consultations last 50 minutes and meetings are arranged weekly and where possible at the same time every week. This can be helpful to both of us to provide continuity and although this is preferred, flexibility of meetings is also possible.

How many sessions will I need?

This is difficult to answer and depends on the nature of what you are concerned with. Generally, more specific problems may require a fewer number of sessions although sometimes things are not as they first seem and more time is needed.

How do I end?

You can end at any time, though it is important to take account of how we end and to do it with care. The urge to end may be greater when the sessions are challenging, when it may be a better time to stay, to see something difficult through. Endings can be painful and evoke past experiences of loss and separation. It is therefore important to leave aware of the circumstances, and together try to understand the meaning of endings for you.

How much does it cost?

My fee is £50 per 50-minute session.
Counselling, psychotherapy and supervision are charged at the same rate. Therapy is serious work and the fee reflects the seriousness of your commitment. I offer a few spaces at a reduced fee to people who are on very low incomes or on benefits. Please discuss fees with me if you think this might apply to you.

Once we have agreed to work together all appointments are charged for whether you attend or not, including your breaks and cancellations, even when notice is given. I do not carry sessions over to the following week. Exceptionally, if I have to cancel I will try to offer an alternative appointment in the same week.
